Language Level Guide

At Southbourne School of English in Bournemouth, we use the internationally recognized Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) descriptors to assess students' English levels. These levels are:

Beginner (A0) (A0)

Able to engage in basic conversations and understand simple spoken language.

Limited vocabulary for everyday life.

Able to read and write short articles.

Elementary (A1) (A1)

Able to communicate basic needs and discuss personal topics.

Adequate vocabulary for daily activities.

Recognize key grammatical structures.

Capable of writing short personal messages and notes.

Pre-Intermediate(A2)

Can engage in everyday interactions and short conversations.

Able to use key grammatical structures.

Can write more detailed articles.

Intermediate(B1)

Can communicate confidently in a variety of situations.

Accommodation

We understand how important it is to ensure our students are happy where they live, as they take these memories home. That’s why we carefully select all our host families. Students at Southbourne School of English stay with welcoming and caring hosts. However, we only accept students aged 10 and over into homestays. All host families accommodating students under 18 are thoroughly inspected and visited by our dedicated accommodation officer.

Hosts provide a warm environment within walking distance or a short bus ride away! !

Meals

You will experience traditional British meals (breakfast and dinner) with your host family every day.。British food has changed a lot over the years! While we still love our fish and chips, British food now has an international flair! You’ll experience a wide range of international cuisine. On school days, you’ll receive a freshly prepared packed lunch.

Study Plan:

15 hours of classes every week, with afternoon lessons. Each session lasts 3 hours, Monday to Friday: 14:00 – 15:00, 15:15 – 16:15, 16:30 – 17:30.

Maximum class size: 16 students.

Weekly full-day excursion.

Varied and enjoyable sports and activities program.
